Colleges & Universities

In 2013,  I started going to colleges and universities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to make presentations to classes of students studying to be Speech/Language Pathologists (SLP’s) and Special Education Teachers.        Then in 2020, I expanded my outreach by making my presentations to classes of students virtually through Zoom.  Today I continue to educate and inspire students and their professors at more than fifty colleges and universities throughout the United States.

“Students always say Miles’s presentation is one of the semester’s high points.”

Special Education Course at New York University, 2019

“Miles, the educator, the advocate and presenter showed me and my class of undergraduate teacher education students that good teaching can inspire hope, facilitate imagination and personalize learning.”

“Using Augmentative & Assistive Communication, Miles interacted with the students using humor, his personality and personal experiences to build a bridge and encourage the students to join him in a journey of teaching and learning.”

Mark Alter Professor of Education Psychology, NYU

My presentations are both educational and informative. I talk honestly about my personal life, so the students hear from someone who has actually experienced being a special education student and has had to learn to use Augmentative & Alternative Communication.  The students also get a chance to ask questions of someone who was born with disabilities and has faced many challenges in his life.

“Miles brings a unique and inspiring perspective to my graduate level class in Speech Language Pathology. Students initially think they are going to learn about AAC, and they do. But the biggest lesson is about how through AAC technology, the students hear Miles express himself, his goals and his dreams.”

Dr. Cate Crowley, Columbia University Teachers College

In my presentations to the students a major theme is not to underestimate the potential of people who have physical disabilities.  Everyone learns differently and most people want to live as independently as possible and be able to advocate for themselves.

“I am a changed professional having met Miles.  There are so many nuances to his life experience as an AAC user that only he can drive home for others.  Miles’s sincerity and candid presentation conveyed these to my students.”

“SLPs, all interventionists, must make it their business to treat the person in his entirety to support their growth as an individual.  There are few words that capture the lasting impact Miles has made on my students.”

Gladys Siegel, SLP, AAC Evaluator & Adjunct Lecturer
